A fully equipped machine shop sits behind the winding room, with the capability to weld, metalize, and machine a shaft, end bell, bearing housing, or cut a new keyway to speed up the complete repair process. Most shops in this business send the machining out and wait on it. We do not, which is the difference between a rebuild that comes back in days and one that comes back whenever the sublet gets to it.
When we replace a shaft instead of repairing it
If it costs less to replace a shaft, we will use our vertical press to remove and replace the shaft, and complete new shafts are machined from like alloys, in-house. That decision, repair or replace, gets made on the shop floor by the people doing the work, not passed along to a third party.

Machining that serves the whole spine, fractional to 1000 HP
The same machine shop that cuts a keyway on a bench motor also machines the shaft for a 1000 HP rebuild coming off the five ton crane. Mechanical modifications and repairs, removal and replacement of most equipment, and laser alignment all run out of this one corner of the bay, which is why the same crew can turn a job whether it started as a gearbox, a pump, or a motor.
